The most common and large heron in Singapore, and can be nicely photographed due to its size. Head and neck mostly white with diagnostic black cap and nape plumes. Foreneck finely speckled black. Back and the wings grey. Breeding adults develope a bring pinkish-orange bill. Young birds have dark, instead of black, crown and are largely grey on the neck.
