A long-tailed, black and orange chat. Head, back, wings and tail dark glossy black, broken by large patch on rump and uppertail coverts. Belly to undertail rufous-orange. Female similar to male but with black parts replaced by dark grey, with rufous lining to wing feathers. Young birds mostly brown on upperparts wiht buff speckling.
