Superficially resembles King Quail, but has a less rounded appearance, pale irises and a much thicker bill. Male is heavily streaked on back and barred on neck, flank and breast. Female similar but has distinct black throat patch. In flight, contrasting pale with coverts and dark primaries differ from the uniformly dark underwing of the King Quail.
